Essaouira festivals: the 2026 to 2027 calendar

Official poster of the 2026 Gnaoua and World Music Festival in Essaouira

Essaouira does not run on one festival. Between autumn 2026 and summer 2027 the town hosts at least eight events that change the mood of the medina, the price of a room and whether you can find a transfer on a Friday night. Finding the list is easy. Working out which of the dates you read online are actually firm is the hard part, and it is where trips get planned badly.

So this guide does two things the copy and paste event listings do not: it tells you where each date comes from, and it tells you what the festival changes about your stay. If your real question is about weather and wind rather than music, our guide on when to visit Essaouira answers that one instead.

Why so many Essaouira festival dates online are wrong

This is the trap, and it is expensive once the flights are paid for.

  • Organisers announce late. Often a few months out, sometimes only days. Until then the official pages still show last year's edition.
  • Listings copy the previous year. The Festival des Andalousies Atlantiques held its 20th edition from 30 October to 2 November 2025 (Le Matin). Until the 2026 edition was officially announced on 20 October, several sites still displayed those dates as though they carried over unchanged. It actually runs from 29 to 31 October 2026.
  • Some dates are not an organiser's to set. The moussems follow a religious calendar or a brotherhood's decision. You cannot plan them like a concert.

We therefore sort every event into three levels of certainty, and we suggest you do the same:

  • Announced date, confirmed by the organiser: safe to book a flight around.
  • Recurring window: hold the accommodation across the wider window, wait for the announcement before anything else.
  • Moveable date: ask locally, and do not build the trip around it.

Late September, early October 2027MOGAStable window. The 10th edition ran 30 September to 4 October 2026Part of it in a hotel, part of it free across the whole town

Three notes before the detail. The 2026 Andalousies dates, announced on 20 October, and the June 2027 Gnaoua dates, published on the festival's own site, are the firmest in that table. The Alizés and MOGA entries are windows inferred from the previous edition, which is cited each time. And the Swira Breaking Jam, which arrived in May 2026 for its first edition, is the youngest of the group, so it is also the one whose return is least certain.

The three worth planning a trip around

Gnaoua, late June: the one that fills the entire town

This is the safest date of 2027, because the organiser has already published it: the 28th edition of the Gnaoua and World Music Festival runs from 24 to 26 June 2027. For a sense of scale, Moroccan press reported more than 300,000 festivalgoers at the 27th edition in June 2026, in a town whose medina you can cross on foot in twenty minutes.

What that means in practice:

  • rooms go months in advance, not weeks;
  • the Marrakech road and the transfer companies saturate on the Friday;
  • the main stages built the festival's reputation on open access, and a ticketed strand runs alongside them for certain concerts. Check the current arrangement on the official site when you book, because this is exactly the sort of detail that shifts between editions.

Our dedicated Gnaoua article covers the spirit of the festival and its history. To arrive without the stress, a private transfer booked ahead beats hunting for a taxi as you step off the bus.

Printemps Musical des Alizés, late April: the most comfortable

The best kept secret on this list. For its 22nd edition, from 30 April to 3 May 2026, the festival put on twelve free concerts at Dar Souiri, Bayt Dakira and the Salle de la Marche Verte, under the theme of dialogue (Le Matin). It was founded in 2001, it is run by the Fondation Ténor pour la Culture with the Association Essaouira Mogador, and it describes itself as Morocco's only classical music festival.

Why we recommend it so warmly:

  • the window barely moves from year to year, the end of April into the first days of May;
  • the concerts are free, but the rooms are small, so turn up early rather than on time;
  • the season suits everything else you came for, before the summer wind settles in. Our wind guide sets out that calendar in detail.

Andalousies Atlantiques, late October: the most local of the three

The one that tells you most about the town itself. For some twenty years the festival has explored Essaouira's shared Jewish, Arab and Andalusian musical heritage. At the 20th edition, from 30 October to 2 November 2025, the programme ran to around twenty concerts, with morning forums at Bayt Dakira, afternoon concerts at Dar Souiri and the evenings in a larger hall (Le Matin).

The 21st edition, titled "Alif × Alef", runs from 29 to 31 October 2026: around fifteen concerts between the big top of the Grande Scène, Dar Souiri and Bayt Dakira, where the Forum des Andalousies meets in the mornings, and a closing night that brings piyut and gnaoua together (TelQuel, 20 October 2026). If this is the edition you want, now is the time to book a room.

MOGA, the early October special case

The electronic music festival turned ten in 2026, running from 30 September to 4 October, and it works in two halves you need to separate before booking. MOGA IN, from 2 to 4 October, takes place in a hotel outside the medina. MOGA OFF, free and open to everyone on 30 September and 1 October, spreads across 18 partner venues and 32 hotspots around town, from cafés to cultural institutions and workshops (Hespress).

In other words, for the first two days the festival is not in a venue, it is everywhere. Good news if you happen to be in town, and useful to know if you came for quiet. In that case move your plans inland for a morning, for example into the argan forest.

The moussems: the other calendar, the one you will not find online

This is the part of Essaouira that official programmes do not cover, and it rewards anyone who arrives with the right expectations.

  • The Moussem des Regraga, in spring, is a pilgrimage that moves through 44 stages in the countryside around Essaouira, shrine by shrine, with souks and horsemanship displays along the way. It is a living tradition rather than a show, and most of it happens outside the town.
  • The hiloula of Rabbi Haïm Pinto, in September, draws an international Jewish pilgrimage into the medina.
  • Sufi brotherhood moussems punctuate the year with chant and ceremony, on dates that are rarely announced far ahead.

Reaching them means leaving town: a rental car or a private transfer with a driver who knows the tracks makes the day possible. And out of respect, ask before you photograph anyone.

What a festival actually changes about your stay

Three levels of effect, depending on the event.

  • Accommodation. For Gnaoua, think in months. For the Andalousies, the Alizés or MOGA, a few weeks still works. For the Biennale, which runs a full month, there is no particular pressure at all.
  • Getting around. The medina is pedestrian and closes off further on concert nights. The useful habit is to be dropped off and collected at a set time rather than looking for a parking space.
  • Daytime activities. Here is the part almost nobody plans for: Essaouira's festivals occupy late afternoons and evenings. Your mornings stay completely free, and they are the best hours of the day for everything else.

What to book around a festival

Time of dayWhat works during a festivalWhy
MorningPottery workshop, cooking workshop, solidarity embroideryWorkshops run on fixed slots and the programme does not start before the afternoon
Late morningHammam and treatment, wellness traditionsThe best possible preparation for a night on your feet in a packed room
Early afternoonGuided medina tour, traditional marketsA guide knows which lanes the stages have closed off
Late afternoon and eveningThe festivalThis is where everything happens
Buffer day either sideSurf session, argan forest, escape gameRecovery without leaving town

To pick the morning workshop, our pottery workshop guide compares the five formats, and if it rains on your buffer day, Essaouira in the rain has a plan B for every activity. If you are building a whole trip around a festival, our three day itinerary gives you the structure and our cost of a day in Essaouira prices every line. If you are coming over from Marrakech for one concert, read Essaouira day trip from Marrakech first, because the drive changes the whole calculation.

Three mistakes we see every year

  • Booking flights on an unconfirmed date. If the source is not the organiser, treat the date as a window rather than an appointment.
  • Scheduling a long excursion on a concert day. Late returns and country roads after dark are a poor combination. Save the hinterland for a day with nothing programmed.
  • Assuming it is all free, or all ticketed. Both models coexist, sometimes inside the same festival, and the balance moves between editions.

One closing thought. Outside festival weeks Essaouira does not go dark, which is the whole argument of our piece on Essaouira off season. A calendar is there to help you choose, not to make you feel you have to.
