Essaouira with Kids: What to Do This Summer?

This summer, are you looking for a destination that combines sun, a change of scenery and activities for the whole family, from toddlers to teenagers? Essaouira is THE answer. The city of the trade winds offers an exceptional setting for family holidays, with a range of activities designed for every age. Unlike Marrakech where the thermometer easily exceeds 40°C in July and August, Essaouira stays mild (22-26°C) thanks to the Atlantic trade winds. And above all, it's a city where you can entrust your children to local professionals for a pottery workshop while parents explore the medina, where teenagers can let loose on a buggy in the dunes, and where everyone reunites in the evening facing the sunset over the ocean. In this article, we tell you everything: what to do, from what age, how much it costs, and how to organise your stay stress-free.
Why Essaouira is a great destination for families

Essaouira ticks all the boxes of a family-friendly destination. Here's why it's, in our opinion, one of the best spots in Morocco for a holiday with children:
- A pedestrian, calm and secure medina. No cars charging through, no scooters weaving between pedestrians. The alleyways are wide, shaded, and you can let children walk ahead without stress.
- A huge, safe beach. Essaouira's main beach stretches for miles. The slope is gentle, the swell moderate (except on very windy days), making it an ideal playground for children.
- Mild summer weather. While the rest of Morocco bakes under the heat, Essaouira breathes. July temperatures of 22-26°C are perfect for young children who struggle with extreme heat. Just pack a light sweater for the evening; it cools down quickly.
- A relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. No oppressive mass tourism here. The people of Essaouira are used to families, friendly with children, and the city's pace naturally invites you to slow down.
- Activities for all ages. From pottery modelling at age 3 to buggy riding at 16, via pastry-making and cooking, you're bound to find something to occupy every member of the tribe, without anyone getting bored.
Family activities in Essaouira, sorted by age

We've ranked our best activities by minimum age, so you can plan your programme at a glance. Prices shown are for summer 2026, provided by our local partners.
From age 3: pottery & craft workshops
Even the youngest aren't left out in Essaouira. Our pottery workshops are open from age 3, with adapted supervision. It's the ultimate gentle activity: you knead, you shape, you paint, and you leave with your creation. Parents can join in or take the opportunity to explore the medina just steps away. The workshop is located right in the heart of the medina, in a bright and soothing space.
From age 3, children can model, throw and paint. A creative and relaxing activity that appeals to both little ones and parents alike.
From age 5: the Sea & Land ecological adventure
This is THE exceptional day out to experience as a family. Departure at 9am, return at 7pm: Berber breakfast, visit to a beekeeping farm, climb to the heights of Sidi M'Barek, introduction to traditional fishing, camel ride, sandboarding session in the dunes, and to finish, dinner in a natural cave facing the ocean. A full day that crosses every landscape of the region and delights children and adults alike. Accessible from age 5, it's the ultimate family activity.
The most complete and memorable day for a family. Berber breakfast, camel ride, sandboarding, fishing and dinner in a cave: your children will talk about it all summer.
From age 8: the oriental pastry workshop
If your children love getting their hands in the dough, this 2-hour workshop is made for them. Gazelle horns, ghribas, almond shortbread: they learn to make the great classics of Moroccan pastry under the watchful eye of a local expert. The workshop ends with a tasting around mint tea, and children leave with their creations (if they haven't already eaten them). A perfect activity for a family afternoon.
From age 12: the Moroccan cooking workshop
For older ones, things get more serious. This 4-hour workshop plunges you into the secrets of Moroccan gastronomy: zaalouk, briouates, tagine, couscous... Teenagers learn to master spices, cook a real tagine and set a table like in Morocco. The workshop includes a quick visit to the spice souk and ends with a shared meal where everyone enjoys the fruits of their labour. A cultural and gourmet immersion that makes a change from screens.
From age 16: buggy riding on the coastal tracks
This is the moment teenagers (and parents) have been waiting for. Buggy riding is the activity that ignites passion: off-road driving, dunes, wild beaches, eucalyptus forests, fishing villages... With the Atlantic as a backdrop and adrenaline guaranteed. Several options are available depending on your appetite for adventure.
With a child under 3, our guide to Essaouira with a baby gives the UV index month by month and the minimum age for each activity.
What you can do freely, without booking

Not everything requires a reservation in Essaouira. Here's what you can do for free, whenever you want:
- Essaouira's main beach: free, huge, ideal for running, building sandcastles, swimming (under supervision) and watching kitesurfers. Bring sunscreen and hats.
- The medina and its alleyways: UNESCO-listed, it's a blue and white labyrinth where children love to wander. Show them artisans at work, colourful doors, cats dozing in the sun.
- The fishing port: a permanent spectacle. Blue boats, the comings and goings of fishermen, fish stalls, seagulls circling. Children are fascinated.
- The ramparts and the Skala: a walk along the ramparts offers stunning views of the ocean and Mogador Island. The old cannons always impress the younger ones.
- The fish market: a guaranteed sensory experience. Let your children choose the fish for lunch, a life lesson far more memorable than a textbook lesson.
- Diabat and surroundings: a 10-minute drive from Essaouira, this village and its dunes offer a breath of wild nature. Perfect for a late afternoon stroll.
Our tips for organising your stay

Essaouira is an easy city to live in as a family, but a little organisation never hurts. Here are our recommendations for a smooth holiday:
- Alternate intense activities with free time. A workshop in the morning, the beach in the afternoon, or a big excursion day followed by a quiet morning in the medina. Children (and parents) need time to breathe.
- Book in advance in July and August. Peak season is in full swing, and the best activities (pottery, buggy, cooking workshops) fill up fast. Plan at least a week before you arrive.
- Pack appropriate clothing. Windbreakers for everyone (the wind often picks up in the afternoon), closed shoes for buggy riding and excursions, sunscreen and hats for the beach.
- Embrace flexibility. In Essaouira, the wind sometimes dictates the programme. If a sea outing is cancelled, fall back on a pottery workshop or a stroll through the medina. There's always a Plan B.
- Let us help you. This is our job. We know the good time slots, trusted partners, and we can build you a tailor-made programme that takes into account your children's ages, your budget and your desires. All you have to do is enjoy.
Essaouira is a rare destination: it appeals to toddlers as much as teenagers, to adventurous parents as much as those who just want to relax. Between the beach, creative workshops, cooking, buggy riding and nature excursions, your days will be well-filled, but without the frantic rush of overbooked holidays. And if you want us to handle everything, from booking activities to the day-by-day programme, contact us. Together, we'll build the summer your children will never forget.
