Solidarity Embroidery in Essaouira: A Workshop, A Cooperative, A Real Impact

There is a cooperative in Essaouira that deserves to be talked about. Chouikik has been working for years on women's empowerment and children's education in the region, through the transmission of local artisanal know-how. Their solidarity embroidery workshop is a concrete, simple and accessible way to support them for an afternoon. No staging, no excessive promises. Just two useful and well-spent hours.
The Chouikik Cooperative: What They Do, and Why It Matters
Chouikik is a group of women from Essaouira who have chosen to turn their mastery of traditional embroidery into something bigger than a simple trade. The cooperative is concretely committed to the economic autonomy of its members and to access to education for the community's children. By participating in the workshop, you directly contribute to these actions. This is not a speech: every session organized supports the cooperative's operations and, by extension, the projects it carries out on a daily basis.
What Happens During the Workshop
The workshop lasts 2 hours. You learn the basics of traditional Moroccan embroidery, guided by the cooperative's artisans. No experience needed — the techniques are passed on with patience, and the atmosphere naturally feels like a human exchange rather than a class. You leave with a creation embroidered by your own hands: a tote bag or a pair of socks, depending on your choice. You can also bring a personal garment to customize. For groups or specific wishes, private tailor-made workshops are available upon request. What you bring home has little market value. But it has a story behind it — the story of the women who taught you how to make it.
